If you have spent any time looking to buy CBD, you know that it is a bit chaotic out there. That’s why Leafreport is here to help you make some sense out of the chaos of prices, delivery systems, and how to get the best deal while still getting a quality product. We do the comparisons for you and we research the company, their reputation, their 3rd party test results and their overall product quality for you. See? Easy!

We have surveyed over 3500 products from 52 different brands and rated them based on price, purity of product, the potencies available, the transparency and reputation of each company and their customer service.

The CBD brands and products are divided into different product families:

We also added a general “overall” category one that takes into account the entire product line, its quality, affordability, purity, potency, company information and customer service.

The Best, Most Affordable CBD Tinctures

Tinctures are traditionally made by extracting dried plant material in alcohol. Most CBD tinctures are mostly dissolved in oils like hemp, olive or MCT oil (MCT for medium chain triglycerides which are derived from coconuts).

Tinctures are liquids and usually supplied with a dropper so you can take the liquid by drops. Most droppers are 1mL which is usually considered equal to 20 drops. You can take the tincture directly by mouth, let is “sit” for 30 seconds under your tongue or mix the liquid in a beverage or into food (after cooking, though!). Some research suggests that under the tongue (sublingually) can give the best benefits because the CBD doesn’t have to go through your digestive system first and it can have its effects more rapidly.

Different brands will suggest different dosages– it is best to start with just a few drops and increase until you find your best dose to achieve your goal. A good deal of the process of taking CBD is a process of trial and error. Finding your best dose and your best delivery method– whether its by mixing the tincture with a warm cup of tea, taking the CBD sublingually or by swallowing it as one dose. Be patient and stay aware of your reactions and how the CBD affects your particular symptoms.

Tinctures average $0.12 per mg of CBD this is just the average with 66% of brands have a lower cost. The difference between the lowest and highest cost per mg of CBD in tinctures was 1100%…wow! (The highest price was $0.32/mg CBD). Some of the differences can be explained by different purification methods: CO2 extraction is significantly more expensive than ethanol extraction. Some of the difference may be explained by the use of carrier oils– MCT oil can be expensive than hemp oil, especially if the company grows its own hemp. However, there does not seem to be an overall explanation for the wide differences seen– it may be simply a matter of demand and lack of awareness of actual costs.

With the brands listed here, the average price is below the market average.

Tinctures average price of $0.07 per mg of CBD

cbdMD is a very well-known company with a wide range of products and potencies. Founded in 2015, cbdMD is one of the leading American CBD brands known for producing THC-free, broad-spectrum products. The company’s lineup includes CBD tinctures, bath bombs, gummies, creams, pet products, and topicals.

CbdMD is a nationally recognized name in the CBD industry, with its products available in 700 retail locations across the United States. Each product is made from non-GMO, organic hemp that is grown in America and comes with third-party lab test results.

We did find that the company’s transparency left us less than impressed while they did provide information on 3rd party lab testing results, these along with other bits of information (eg. which extraction procedures were used) were not easy to access. All the products are broad spectrum and are extracted using CO2.

Pros: Cons:
  • Many potencies available
  • Third-party tested
  • High-quality extraction method
  • Multiple flavor options
  • There’s a refund policy within a month of placing an order
  • Not full-spectrum products
  • Lack of detailed information about the manufacturing process
  • No third-party tests for contaminants and test results are difficult to find

Lazarus Naturals

No data for slug: lazarus-naturals

Tinctures average price of $0.04 per mg CBD

Lazarus Naturals has much that is unique about it. They have a wide range of products with a wide range of potencies and one of the few companies that carries RSO ( Rick Simpson Oil). Lazarus Naturals uses traditional ethanol extraction methods, makes lab results easily accessible and has a great reputation for customer service. All tinctures and oils are full spectrum with less than 0.3% THC.

Pros: Cons:
  • Employee-owned
  • Farms 70% of their own hemp supply
  • Free 3 day shipping
  • Good customer service
  • Good variety in their range of products
  • Excellent assistance program for eligible customers
  • Very transparent about lab results and process
  • Ethanol-extraction process yields extract with more of the plant lipids, chlorophyll and other natural compounds from the plant that could prove to be beneficial for the consumer. This is something we call the “entourage effect.”
  • Safeguarded by cGMP regulations.
  • Balm was very slippery when opened, might need to consider alternative packaging.
  • Doesn’t use the preferred CO₂ extraction method that yields extremely clean extract. However, they do test for residual solvents and the process yields extract with additional plant lipids and chlorophyll.
  • Refunds are allocated on a case by case basis, no money back guarantee.

The Best, Most Affordable CBD Gummies

Gummies provide the easiest CBD-edible out there. Though if sugar is a concern for you, make certain you look for sugar-free gummies.

Gummies have the extra advantage in that they can usually be easily cut in half and even into quarters to dose more accurately. Because they have to pass through your digestive system, they are usually slower acting than vapes or a tincture that is taken sublingually.

For reasons that are not clear, the variation in prices for gummies is less than in tinctures. There is a difference of 400% between the lowest and the highest per mg CBD prices (range:$0.04-0.47). The average price of CBD in gummies was $0.14 per mg CBD. 48% of brands were above this average and 52% were below it.

One of the advantages of gummies at least for some consumers is that the flavor added to the gummie can overcome the hemp-y flavor of some tinctures.

With the brands listed here, the average price is below the market average.

Our choices for the best and most affordable gummies are

JustCBD

No data for slug: justcbd

Gummies average price of $0.07 per mg of CBD

JustCBD is a Florida company with all hemp grown in Oregon, one of the US’s “prime” hemp-growing areas. The company carries a wide variety of products with a good range of potencies. They use CO2 extraction methods and all products are 3rd party tested.

They have a great range of gummie flavors and shapes clear bear, sour bear, clear worms, sour worms, happy face, apple rings, peach rings,Watermelon Rings, Sugar Free, Freedom Jets, Freedom Soldiers and blueberry rings.

They also carry sugar-free gummies…and vitamin gummies with added CBD. The amount of CBD per gummie ranges from 8 to 25 mg.

Pros: Cons:
  • 3rd party testing available on all their products and there is a page with sample results.
  • Very informative FAQ and blog pages. The blog posts are a bit short, but packed with information of all sorts. As mentioned, we found good information on vaping along with material addressing issues about dosing, edibles, possible side effects and other useful information
  • Easy to navigate website
  • Wide variety of edibles: gummy bears, rings, worms and ribbons, protein bars and dried fruit with lots of flavors to choose from
  • All of the ingredients for every product are listed
  • Free returns if requested within 2 weeks so keep the original packaging!
    ○ Products bought on sale cannot be returned for a refund
  • They offer free shipping with orders over $20
  • THC content is <0.03%
  • 3rd party testing is great, except there does not appear to be a way to get the results for ALL of your specific purchases
  • No money-back guarantee is offered
  • There is little information offered on the “About Us” page. Not much information is available about the company itself.
  • Not enough information was given on the CBD infused coconut oil. You are left wondering should someone cook with it, take a teaspoon daily by mouth or apply it to sore joints or muscles? Who knows?
  • The major “con” is that there are gaps in the information provided and people could really use more information. The blogs are great but not everyone stops to read them in detail.

The Best, Most Affordable CBD for Pets

If your pet has arthritis, is “highly energetic” or is in pain, has seizures, anxiety or is uncomfortable, CBD may be an effective approach. The research on animals is even sparser than it is on humans with CBD, humans ARE the guinea pigs! However, the research to date indicates that CBD is safe for dogs and, likely cats. Just as with human animals, the best advice is to start low and go slow, discovering the proper dose for your pet by trial and error.

The legal status of CBD for pets is a grey area talk to your vet if possible, but be aware that it may still be illegal for veterinarians in many states to recommend or even discuss CBD for your pet.

Weirdly, CBD for pets is the second most expensive product family. The price per mg ranges from $0.04/mg to $0.42/mg of CBD. The average price was $0.19/mg CBD. Why? Not at all clear. In addition to the variation in prices, there is significant variation in potencies. Also– it can be difficult to tell exactly how much CBD is in an individual chewie. Most of the products are made for dogs, but if your cat (or other pet) is willing, there are no reasons that we know of why you couldn’t use the chewies with other animals.

With the brands listed here, the average price is below the market average.

Pets Products aaverage price of $0.09 per mg CBD

Receptra Naturals was founded in 2016 and is based in Colorado and provide GMP manufacturing protocol and 3rd party lab testing. Transparency and some basic information can be lacking on their website, but the 3rd party test tab goes into some significant detail and that is a definite positive!

They provide CBD oils for pets in “original formula” for most dogs and cats and “plus” for larger breeds. They have 4 sizes the 15, 30 and 60 mL bottles provide 15 mg of CBD per full dropper, but they also have an option (in a 30mL bottle) that supplies 22 mg of CBD per dropper.

Pros: Cons:
  • Simple label and colors are neutral and clean looking.
  • Directions on label are precise and concise.
  • Suggested serving size for tincture consumption based on weight is ideal for a new user.
  • The targeted topical smells too much like hemp or cannabis and is unpleasant.
  • The labels are not that easy to read which does not help the consumer to differentiate between products, it seems they all contain similar ingredients but claim different effects.

The full spectrum oil is very similar but includes terpenes and other cannabinoids with <0.3%THC. Lazarus Naturals also provides dosing guidance for the full spectrum oil.

  • Wide range of products at similar or lower cost than competitors

Capsules and softgels average price for CBD of $0.09 per mg.

The products are pure by 3rd party testing and the customer service is great. CBDfx has 30 count CBD gel capsules with 25 mg of CBD in oil (along with MCT oil) and an 8 count pouch with 25 mg CBD. They also sell the pouch in bundles with pre-filled vape pens or with oil, a 30 mg vape pen and a lemonade “chill shot” of CBD.

As a company, there are some concerns with CBDfx. Transparency is not “tops” for this company they try to appear “100% American Made” but it turns out their products are farmed in Holland. That’s nothing inherently bad about that but it’s not 100% American and so it can’t be certified as 100% organic.

Pros: Cons:
  • Rock-solid customer service on the phone
  • Prices to match all budgets from low end to high end
  • Ingredients appear to be relatively high quality
  • Products all function well and as described
  • Fair pricing for their products compared to competitors equivalent to market average
  • Produced in a cGMP certified facility
  • Owned by a shadowy company with a history that is opaque
  • They don’t regularly test their products through an independent lab
  • Past infractions according to the FTC under different business names
  • Unclear seed-to-shelf process
  • Not USDA certified, but very few CBD products are

Lazarus Naturals

No data for slug: lazarus-naturals

Capsules and softgels average price for CBD of $0.05 per mg.

Lazarus Naturals also makes a re-appearance in the capsule product family. This is another really highly rated company with a great reputation of transparency, customer service and purity of its products.

They have 10 mg/capsule, 25 mg/capsule and 50 mg/capsule full spectrum CBD all available in 10, 40 and 200 count bottles. Their sister company, Cycling Frog also sells 100 mg CBD/softgel in “olde-tyme” corked vials in either a 4- or a 20-count vial.

They also have a “Relaxation Blend” which combines 25 mg CBD isolate with calming herbs like Ashwagandha and chamomile and calming amino acids like L-Tryptophan, and L-Theanine. Finally, Lazarus Naturals carries an “Energy Blend” that combines 25 mg CBD isolate with an adaptogen, rhodiola, along with caffeine, theanine and vitamin B12.

The Best, Most Affordable CBD Vapes and E-Liquids

Vapes have been in the news lately and in some states (check yours) vapes and e-liquids cannot be sold. Most of this appears to be related to fly-by-night sellers and the inclusion of Vitamin-E acetate in the vapes and e-liquids. The reputable companies are currently ensuring that this vitamin E derivative is not included, but you should be aware that vaping is not the healthiest way of taking in CBD– it is the fastest, but the effect is also the shortest. Vaping is usually best for any sudden onset of pain, insomnia, tremors, depression or anxiety or any other issue that comes on suddenly (acutely). For vapes and e-liquids, a company that publishes its 3rd party testing results is critical– you definitely want any vapes and e-liquids coming from a reputable company that puts purity of product before profit! Another aspect is the ratio of vegetable glycerin and propylene glycol– the most common ratio is 70:30. While both are considered safe by the FDA, you want to get vapes that are at least 70:30 if not higher in vegetable glycerin. More propylene glycol achieves more vapor while more vegetable glycerin provides a smoother vape.

Vapes and e-liquids have somewhat less variation in prices the average cost is $0.13 per mg of CBD while the range is from $0.06 to $0.48 per mg of CBD.

With the brands listed here, the average price is below the market average.

Average price for vapes and e-liquids of $0.1 per mg of CBD

SavageCBD is a pretty well rated company as far as transparency, reputation, prices, buying experience and range of available products but does lag in customer service. The company uses CO2 extraction methods and has full spectrum, broad spectrum and CBD isolates available.

They have vape juices available in various flavors like mango, strawberry, kiwi , apple and others. All vape juices contain 250, 500 or 1000 mg CBD in 30 mL bottles. They also have pre-filled vape pens and cartridges.

Pros: Cons:
  • Lab reports online for the most recent batches
  • Military discount
  • Free shipping in the USA on all orders
  • Vague company information
  • No return policy

JustCBD

No data for slug: justcbd

Makes another appearance here with average price for vapes and e-liquids of $0.12 per mg CBD.

JustCBD is one of our more highly rated companies, though it does need to work in its transparency but it has some highly informative articles on vaping.

JustCBD carries vape pens, vape cartridges and vape liquids. The cartridges contain full-spectrum CBD oil (200mg) and include strawberry, pineapple, lemon, watermelon, pumpkin, blueberry, mango, and honey flavors.

They do NOT contain Vitamin E acetate. Vape juices come in several flavors including strawberry, pineapple, watermelon, blueberry, cookies, mango, blue raspberry and pina colada. You can get 100, 250, 500 and 1000mg total CBD options in the vape oils.

Here again and with good reason cbdMD has a great selection of products at an average price of $0.11 that is well below the market average.

They carry tinctures, gummies, topicals, capsules, pet products, bath bombs and a newly added sleep aid– CBD with added melatonin. The company has an excellent reputation for quality, though we would like to see some greater and easier access to lab results!

Pros: Cons:
  • Wide range of products at similar or lower cost than competitors
  • Distinct, delicious flavors with little to no after taste
  • Quick, easy buying experience with no to low cost shipping options
  • Detailed information regarding manufacturing and extraction process difficult to find
  • Some products missing ingredient information
  • CoA and other test results for each product are not readily available on website

Lazarus Naturals

No data for slug: lazarus-naturals

Is an overall great company with outstanding customer service. They use ethanol extraction– this is less expensive but still an excellent, traditional method that results in pure CBD this at least partially explains their very low price of $0.04 per mg CBD. They also carry a wide variety of CBD products which are “consciously crafted” by Lazarus Naturals. They also bundle and provide coconut oil, company-related merchandise and RSO oil.

Pros: Cons:
  • Employee-owned
  • Farms 70% of their own hemp supply
  • Free 3 day shipping
  • Good customer service
  • Good variety in their range of products
  • Excellent assistance program for eligible customers

Their product line is not extensive, but have an average price of $0.10 per mg of CBD.

Has some issues to work on transparency and labelling accuracy stand out as an issue. On the other hand, their suggested serving size based on consumer weight is a great innovation and their labels are readable and understandable. They also have a separate tab for products that are 100% THC-free (0% THC) and include a page of CBD recipes in their blog.

Pros: Cons:
  • Simple label and colors are neutral and clean looking.
  • Directions on label are precise and concise.
  • Suggested serving size for tincture consumption based on weight is ideal for a new user.
  • Offers 0% THC products.
  • The targeted topical smells too much like hemp or cannabis and is unpleasant.
  • The body butter consistency is not ideal and does not absorb effectively.
  • It is unclear what the difference is between the body butter and the targeted topical.
  • The labels are not that easy to read which does not help the consumer to differentiate between products, it seems they all contain similar ingredients but claim different effects.
  • The 0% THC tincture and the other tinctures are hard to distinguish for the consumer who is new to the space. It seems like

How to Buy, What to Look For and How to Compare CBD Products

It has often been said that the CBD market is chaotic with many, many players and often leaves the consumer somewhat confused and frustrated. People want a pure product at a reasonable price but don’t always know what to look for. This is the “raison d’etre” for Leafreport, we are here to help answer your questions and to guide you into how to make your best choices in the CBD world.

What Informs the Quality and Price of CBD Oils?

This may seem like a simple question, one would like to say that quality and price is informed by how the hemp is grown, how it is processed and how CBD is extracted. It doesn’t appear to be that simple and we are not entirely certain why.

Both ethanol and CO2 extraction methods should provide pure product and since the ethanol extraction process is less expensive, one would think that would result in a more affordable product. Sometimes that is the case, but the cost of extraction (or growing and processing) does not appear to be the way most companies end up pricing their product. We are left with the idea that pricing appears to be based on a company’s desire for a specific bottom line.

As far as quality, the pressure from the consumer has pushed most companies to produce 3rd party testing lab results and that is great from the consumer’s point of view.

CBD is, after all, an herb and a plant-derived product so you DO want to ensure that it is pure and clean and the labeling is accurate. You also want to ensure that it is pesticide, heavy metal and microbe-free. This is where the lab results can be the most useful.

The easiest way to compare CBD from different companies is to calculate the cost per mg of CBD. To do this, divide the total dollar amount of the product by the total amount of CBD included in that product. Most companies have the total CBD amount (in mg) on the label.

What to Look for Before You Buy CBD?

Since there are so many players in the CBD market, you should ensure that the product is pure, un-contaminated and the company has built up a reputation for accuracy, reliability, transparency and for customer support. Leafreport does this for you in our reviews.

You also want to ensure that the form of delivery topical, oral or by inhalation is the best way to achieve your goals. There is lots to be done researching these sorts of questions, but we can help there too. check out our “Education” Tab for articles, interviews, CBD news and evidence-based use of CBD. You can also find lots of answers under the “Best CBD” tab, with sections on delivery methods and specific health benefits.

Keep in mind that CBD to a large degree has been available online for less than 2 years and the number of companies selling CBD has really and truly exploded.

You are probably aware of the “vaping crisis” that has recently been in the news. This should sound a cautionary note for vaping in general, but more broadly, it should make you aware that just because a company says something is natural and pure does not mean it is.

Research into the benefits, effects and potential adverse effects of CBD is in its infancy most of our information is based on anecdotal use. No one wants to put down anyone’s personal experience with CBD but the fact is that there is more we do NOT know about how CBD works than we know…it is a complicated area and still difficult to find funding to do the research.

The best you can do is to check out the lab reports and check into the reputation and standing of the company from which you intend to buy. CBD is not a miracle but it IS an apparently very safe approach to certain conditions and to achieving certain goals. The best approach is to get informed, stay informed and to start out with the lowest dose of CBD working by a process of trial and error to find your ideal dose that achieves your goal.
